Drawing on twenty years of first-hand experience in critical infrastructure disaster forensics, this unique book will provide readers with an unrivalled understanding of how and why power and communication networks fail – and how to prevent future failures. Includes over 350 disaster-site photographs from real-world case studies.
Power and communications networks are uniquely important in times of disaster. Drawing on twenty years of first-hand experience in critical infrastructure disaster forensics, this book will provide you with an unrivalled understanding of how and why power and communication networks fail. Discover key concepts in network theory, reliability, and resilience, and see how they apply to critical infrastructure modelling. Explore real-world case-studies of power grid and information and communication network (ICN) performance and recovery during earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis, and other natural disasters; as well as man-made disasters. Understand the fundamentals of disaster forensics, learn how to apply these principles to your own field investigations, and identify practical, relevant strategies, technologies and tools for improving power and ICN resilience. With over 350 disaster-site photographs of real-world power and ICN equipment, this is the ideal introduction to resilience engineering for professional engineers and academic researchers working in power and ICN system resilience.

Alexis Kwasinski is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the R. K. Mellon Faculty Fellow in Energy, at the University of Pittsburgh. He is an expert in critical infrastructure resilience, and is a co-author of Microgrids and other Local Area Power and Energy Systems (2016). Andres Kwasinski is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology, with an emphasis on wireless communications and networking. He is a co-author of Cooperative Communications and Networking (2009), and the Chief Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Resource Center. Vaidyanathan Krishnamurthy is a Reliability Data Scientist at Ørsted A/S, with experience in the development of software, frameworks and tools for modeling large-scale networks and failure analysis for renewable energy systems.
