This brief provides a comprehensive introduction on the flow-induced instabilities (e.g., the pressure fluctuations and the vibrations) of the reversible pump turbines (RPTs) in the pumped hydro energy storage power stations (PHSEPSs) in China based on long-term field tests. The pressure fluctuations and the vibrations of several RPTs in China under different operational conditions are analysed in detail to reveal their generation mechanisms and propagation characteristics. The book presents advanced signal analysis and processing methods which are used for obtaining the time-frequency information and for finding the internal correlations between several types of signals. Advanced artificial intelligence algorithms are adopted for understanding the effective fault diagnosis and the identification of different flow patterns. The book overviews the fundamentals of the RPTs and the signal analysis methods, while it demonstrates that the analysis results of the pressure fluctuation and vibration data may be employed for the calibration of numerical simulations and the comparisons of model tests. It is primarily targeted to researchers and engineers working on the fields of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of hydraulic machineries.

lt;b>Xianghao Zheng received his doctor's degree from North China Electric Power University in June 2022. He has mainly focused his research interests in the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of the prototype reversible pump turbine in the pumped hydro energy storage power station. He has published 7 journal papers in these fields, which investigated the flow-induced pressure fluctuation and vibration in the reversible pump turbine.

Yuning Zhang is currently a professor in North China Electric Power University. He has published over 50 journal papers as leading author or corresponding author (10 highly cited papers and 1 hot paper). His primary expertise is hydroturbines. He also serves as Chairman of International Cavitation Forum 2016, an Associate Editor of IET Renewable Power Generation, member of organizing committee of WIMRC International Symposium of Cavitation (UK) and many other international conferences. He severs as a regular reviewer of several high-profile international journals. He has given six invited talks on international conferences. He has received many awards from University of Warwick, China Scholarship Council, Chinese Academy of Science and Tsinghua University.

Yuning Zhang is currently an associate professor in China University of Petroleum-Beijing. She has mainly focused her research interests on cavitation in fluid machinery and the bubble dynamics in liquid. She has published 18 journal papers in these fields, which analysed the nonlinear oscillations of bubbles and investigated the mechanisms of the synergetic effects between particle abrasion and cavitation erosion in hydraulic machinery.

Jinwei Li is currently a professorate senior engineer in China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research. He is a leading expert in the field of the reversible pump turbine and other related hydraulic machineries. He has presided over or participated in over 70 science and technology projects. He has obtained 1 provincial and ministerial-level key promotion of advanced practical water conservancy technology and 2 computer software copyrights. He has won 1 first prize and 1 third prize of the hydropower science and technology prize. He has obtained 4 invention patents and 3 utility model patents. He has participated in 3 emergency responses and 8 reviews of large and medium-sized projects. He has participated in the compilation and publication of 2 monographs. He has published over 15 journal papers. He has finished 9 engineering projects as the project leader.
