Wind Energy Applications and Wide Area Management Systems: Integrating High Shares of Energy Into Power Grids covers the most recent developments in holistic management systems of wind power plants. The book focuses on the implementation of Wide Area Management Systems (WAMS) to facilitate various controls of wind power plants to provide ancillary services, independently, or as a key element of hybrid power plants. It considers both virtual testing as well as hardware-in-the loop validations, discussing the strong nexus between wind energy and WAMS towards perfect compliance with grid codes and stable power systems with near 100% renewable energy.

Moreover, the book presents simulation models which are ready to be reproduced and guidance on developing the necessary case studies and benchmarks in various simulation platforms, e.g. MATLAB, DIgSILENT and PSS/E. This reference is useful for all those interested in wind power plant operation and electrical engineering and power grids.

Dr Ayman Attya obtained BSc(Hons) in Electrical Power Engineering from Ain Shams University in 2005 and 2008 and his doctorate of engineering (Dr-Ing.) from TU Darmstadt in 2014. His research interests cover power systems modelling and stability, wind energy and energy storage. He is author of several top-quality publications, proposing novel methods to enhance the provision of ancillary services by wind energy to the grid, among other topics. Dr Attya was a visiting scholar at Catalonia institute for energy research and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult UK in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Throughout his career, he has developed the skills to use accredited software in his research activities (e.g. Matlab, DIgSILENT and PSS®E). He is a Chartered Engineer through the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Full Member of the EPSRC College. Dr Jose Luis Dominguez-Garcia holds a B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering and obtained his PhD degree receiving the Extraordinary PhD award from UPC. He was a research visitor of the Institute of Energy in Cardiff University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Huddersfield, in 2011, 2016 and 2018, respectively. Currently, he is Head of the Power Systems group at Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), focusing on integration and control of renewable and power electronics, communications, distribution grid management and system resilience. He has been awarded the Distinguished Visitor Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering and is an journal Editorial Board member of Electrical Engineering (Springer), Sustainability (MDPI), Clean Technology (MDPI) and Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Hindawi). He has been a guest Editor on two special issues and is author and co-author of 40 journal papers, 5 book chapters, two patent applications and 2 software registrations.
