The battery management system (BMS) optimizes the efficiency of batteries under allowable conditions and prevents serious failure modes. This book focuses on critical BMS techniques, such as battery modeling; estimation methods for state of charge, state of power and state of health; battery charging strategies; active and passive balancing methods; and thermal management strategies during the entire lifecycle. It also introduces functional safety and security-related design for BMS, and discusses potential future technologies, like digital twin technology.

Professor Yang Shichun is Dean of School of Transportation Science & Engineering at Beihang University, Leading personnel of scientific and technological innovation in the National Ten-thousand Talents Program, leading personnel among the young and middle-aged in the Ministry of Science and Technology, National outstanding scientific and technological worker. Vice Chairman of Electric Vehicle Division of National Technical Committee of Automobile Standardization (NTCAS), expert of Road Vehicle Specialized Committee of China Intelligent Transportation System Association (CTTSA), Vice Chairman of SAE Vehicle Safety and Information Security Technical Committee. His research mainly works on scientific and technological research for EV power system safety, high-efficient optimal theory and integrated control.   Dr. Xinhua Liu is an Assistant Professor of School of Transportation Science & Engineering at Beihang University, Visiting Lecture ofDyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London (UK). Her research interests mainly lie in the interface between electrochemical science and engineering applying a digital process, including designer energy materials for various energy storages; model-driven microstructure optimization for high performance batteries; cloud control based battery degradation mechanism, diagnose and battery management system design.   Dr. Shen Li is a Research Associate of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, UK, since 2018. He is also a technical consultant at Imperial Consultants Ltd, UK, since 2021. His research interests include solid mechanics including interfacial contact problem and friction, energy storage including lithium-ion battery simulation using electrochemical model and equivalent circuit model, battery thermal management, degradation, control algorithm and pack level simulation.   Dr. Cheng Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Institute for Clean Growth & Future Mobility at Coventry University, UK since 2019.
