This book offers a broad and detailed view about how traditional distribution systems are evolving smart/active systems. The reader will be able to share the view of a number of researchers directly involved in this field. For this sake, philosophical discussions are enriched by the presentation of theoretical and computational tools. A senior reader may incorporate some concepts not available during his/her graduation process, whereas new Engineers may have contact with some material that may be essential to his/her practice as professionals.

A . C. Zambroni de Souza holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (1987), a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1990) and a PhD in Electrical Engineering - University of Waterloo Canada (1995). He is currently a full professor at the Federal University of Itajubá. He was a Visiting Professor (CAPES Scholarship) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2000. In 2008 he was with the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. He acts in the area of stability of electrical systems, with special emphasis on the topic of voltage stability in transmission and distribution systems. As sub-topics, it works on voltage control and reactive power and analysis of electrical losses. Nowadays, his focus is on smart grids and smart cities, which includes the social effects of technologies. He is associate editor of the Journal of Control, Automation & Electrical Systems. Since 2015 he has been an Associate Editor of the Renewable Power Generation (IET-RPG) and of the IET Power Electronics, both under the coordination of The Institution of Engineering and Technology in the United Kingdom. He has served as a reviewer in national and international magazines and conferences. He is Fellow Member of the 'IET - The Institution of Engineering and Technology', and has edited a book with Springer on 'Microgrids Design'.

Bala Venkatesh received a Ph.D. degree from Anna University, India in 2000. He is a Professor and Academic Director, Centre for Urban Energy, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. His research interests include Power System Analysis and Optimization. He is both founding academic director and head of the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) at Ryerson University. He is also a tenured professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He specializes in electric power systems with interests in transmission and distribution systems, renewables, energy storage and smart grids. He works with industry partners such as Hydro One, Toronto Hydro, the Independent Electricty System Operator (IESO), Schneider Electric, eCAMION, Temporal Power, Alectra Utilities and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited. In total, his extramural funding is over $15 million. In the last two decades, he has worked on over 30 consulting and research projects in India and Canada. With a Ph.D. from Anna University (India), Dr. Venkatesh is a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Canada. Since 1994, he has also taught at the University of New Brunswick, Multimedia University (Malaysia) and Anna University. Dr. Venkatesh has extensive journal publications to his credit and has supervised over 50 MASc and PhD theses.
