This book investigates the control and optimization of grid-tied power converters, with a special attention attached to pulse width modulation, which determines the size and cost of power converters as well as switching harmonics. Through the methods introduced in this book, multiple grid-tied power converters safely operate and coordinate in a highly efficient and reliable fashion, thereby boosting the operation of modern power grids. To facilitate understanding, the key methods are presented together with their associated algorithms and detailed software codes. In parallel to theoretical treatments, this book further applies the methods into practical scenarios and industrial products, thus enhancing their credibility. The book serves as a guidance for electrical engineers and researchers in the field of power electronics and power systems.

Feng Gao received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in electrical engineering from Shandong University, Jinan, China, in 2002 and 2005, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2009. From 2008 to 2009, he was a research fellow in Nanyang Technological University. Since 2010, he joined the School of Electrical Engineering, Shandong University, where he is currently a professor at School of Control Science and Engineering. From September 2006 to February 2007, he was a visiting scholar at the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark. His research interests include topological design, pulse width modulation, and control of grid-tied power converters. He has published more than 180 research papers in premium international journals and conferences.

Dr. Gao is an IEEE senior member. He was the recipient of the IEEE Industry Applications Society Industrial Power Converter Committee Prize for a paper published in 2006 and 2017 IEEE Power Electronics Transactions Second Prize Paper Award, and he has been serving as the associate editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS from 2012 and CPSS TRANSCATIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS AND APPLICATIONS from 2017.

Tao Xu received his B.Eng. degree and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Shandong University, Jinan, China, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. From September 2017 to September 2018, he was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark. Since 2019, he joined the School of Electrical Engineering, Shandong University, where he is currently a research fellow. His research interests are paralleled inverters, power quality and modulation methods. He has published more than 30 journal and conference papers.  Dr. Xu was the recipient of IEEE Power Electronics Transactions Second Prize Paper Award in 2017 and IEEE PELS Prize Ph.D. Thesis Talk in 2019.
