This book is the first research collection by the Malaysian Society for Automatic Control Engineers (MACE). Numerous applications of control engineering, sensor, and instrumentation technology in robotics, industrial automation, and other mechatronic systems are presented in this book.

The book begins by introducing control engineering in robotics and industrial automation. It progresses through a series of chapters, discussing the application of control engineering in various areas such as:

  • brake-by-wire technology;
  • web scrubber systems;
  • robot localization; and,
  • autonomous navigation systems.

Coverage of swarm robotics behaviors and applications of sensor technology in the field of music, biomedical technology, and structural analysis takes the book beyond its core of mechatronic systems and demonstrates a more diverse application of the ideas it presents.

Each chapter provides comprehensive and detailed coverage of the main ideas, design methods, and practical needs of its chosen topic, making this book accessible and useful to researchers, engineers, postgraduates, and undergraduate students.

Dr Muralindran Mariappan gained his PhD in Robotics from the Universiti Malaysia Sabah in 2008, where he'd previously graduated with his MSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2004. He worked in a number of academic positions, until reaching his current positions as the Head of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Head of Robotics & Intelligent Systems (myRIS), Artificial Intelligent Research Unit, at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He authored or co-authored over 100 books, book chapters, journal articles and proceedings papers, as well as having filed for 7 patents. He has worked on various conference committees and boards, including the International Conference on Computational Science and Technology and the IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics, Robotics & Automation.

Professor Mohd Rizal Arshad is currently a Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) and full Professor at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and attached to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Technology. Prior to this, he served as an academic staff at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia from 1999 until 2019. He gained his MSc from University of Salford in 1996, and his PhD from the University of Liverpool in 1999. He has supervised over 12 PhD and 10 Masters students. He is a member of various international councils and committees, including the General Chair for IEEE USYS Conference series multiple times, and President of the Malaysian Society for Automatic Control Engineers (MACE-IFAC). He has published numerous works, including co-authoring book chapters and more than 150 technical reports and research papers.

Professor Rini Akmeliawati graduated with his PhD in 2002 from the University of Melbourne. He has worked in a variety of industrial and academic positions, up until his current position as a professor in the Mechatronics Engineering department of the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is a member of several editorial boards, including the 'International Journal of Electrical Engineering and Applied Sciences' and the 'International Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics', the latter of which he is co-editor-in-chief. He has published over 50 journal articles, 24 books or book chapters, and over 120 conference papers.

Dr Chong Shin Horng is an associate professor at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka's Department of Control Instrumentation and Automation. He graduated in 2003 from the University of Technology Malaysia with his MSc, and then in 2010 from the Tokyo Institute of Technology with his PhD.
