A multidisciplinary approach to the latest developments of nanomedicine for the treatment of different facets of diabetes.
By 2030, diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of premature mortality worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. The application of nanotechnology in medicine holds many possible advantages and over the past few decades, there has been huge progress in its utilisation. Nanotechnology is widely applied for cancer treatment and other diseases but, the use of it for diabetes treatment is now starting to flourish. This book presents the latest developments of nanomedicine for the treatment of different facets of diabetes and related disorders. With a multidisciplinary approach, chapters focus on previously overlooked topics in glucose sensing, insulin delivery and secretion, bioimaging and transplantation of islets. This book is suitable for researchers of nanomedicine, nanotechnology and diabetes looking into the emergence of new approaches for the treatment of this life-threatening disease.

Amar ABDERRAHMANI (>119 papers, h-index: 28, 3008 citations) is Full Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at University of Lille since 2011, and Honorary Senior Research Scientist at imperial College London. He was awarded with the Chair of Excellence from the National Research Agency in experimental diabetology in 2011. He has a long-standing experience in human and rodent islet beta cells, pathophysiology of diabetes and pharmacology. Sabine Szunerits is Full Professor of Chemistry at University of Lille. Her current research interests are in the area of materials science with emphasis on the development of novel nanostructures and approaches for biomedical applications as well as sensing related issues. She is co-author of more than 320 research publications, wrote 24 book chapters and has 7 patents. In 2018, she was awarded with the CNRS Silver Medal for her contribution in the fields of sensing and nanomedicine.
