This book introduces the fundamentals and principles of laser shock peening (LSP) for aeronautical materials. It focuses on the innovation in both theory and method related to LSP-induced gradient structures in titanium alloys and Ni-based alloys which have been commonly used in aircraft industries. The main contents of the book include: the characteristics of laser shock wave, the formation mechanism of gradient structures and the strengthening-toughing mechanism by gradient structures. The research has accumulated a large amount of experimental data, which has proven the significant effectiveness of LSP on the improvement of the fatigue performance of metal parts, and related findings have been successfully applied in aerospace field. This book could be used by the researchers who work in the field of LSP, mechanical strength, machine manufacturing and surface engineering, as well as who major in laser shock wave and materials science.

Liucheng Zhou, born in 1987, is an associate professor at Science and Technology on Plasma Dynamics Laboratory, Air Force Engineering University, Xi'an, China. He received a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology from Air Force Engineering University in 2013, and his doctoral dissertation was awarded the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of the PLA (2015) and the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China Mechanical Engineering Society (2015). In 2017, he was selected into the Youth Talent Supportive Project of China Association for Science and Technology, and won the second prize of National Technical Invention Award (2015) and the first prize of Technical Invention of the Aeronautical Society (2014). He has been engaged in research on surface strengthening, repairing and remanufacturing of aviation components and structural strength evaluation, etc., presided over National Major Special Projects of the Aero Engine and Gas Turbine, the National Key Research and Development Program, the Youth Talent Supportive Project of Chinese Association for Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has published 38 papers and 7 invention patents applied or authorized.

Weifeng He, received the M.S. degree in aircraft design in 2003 and Ph.D. degree in aerospace science and technology in 2006 in the Air Force Engineering University, Xi'an, China. He is now a professor in the science and technology on plasma dynamics laboratory. His research interests include laser manufacture, surface treatment techniques and structural strength.
