Microchip AVR microcontrollers are the heart of many electronics projects and were used as Atmel AVRs in very popular Arduino boards for many years. This book explains how to program ATmega microcontrollers (MCUs) directly, without using the Arduino environment, by using a free GNU AVR Toolchain (available on Windows, Linux, Mac OS). A lot of practical details about the microcontrollers of this series, also from hardware point of view, are provided together with corresponding code examples. This textbook also attempts to combine two worlds: the hardware (details about the typical electrical connections of microcontrollers, operating voltages etc.) and the software (based on C programming).
The learning outcomes of this book include:
Learn 8-bit AVR microcontrollers with easily understandable question and answer pairs
Over 200 multiple choice questions (with answers) to check the learning progress
Complete program examples for AVR MCUs ATmega88PA, ATmega328P, ATmega8A
Learn about fuse bits, quartz crystals and RC oscillator calibration
Understand what makefiles are and how executable codes for MCUs are created
Use digital outputs as well as read digital and analog inputs of the microcontrollers
Connect seven-segment displays to MCU output pins to represent decimal numbers
Display multiplexed ADC results on the LCD module
UART communication and I2C interfacing to EEPROM and RTC modules
Learn to access the full range of hardware power of the microcontroller (timer/counters, PWM, interrupts, and many more).
The content of this book is prepared to be used alongside the myAVR MK2 Embedded Systems Engineering microcontroller kit, which allows prototyping of microcontroller based embedded systems completely without any soldering (available separately).
