This book provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in a wide range of biomaterials for the development of smart and advanced functional materials. It discusses the fundamentals of bio-interfacial interactions and the surface engineering of emerging biomaterials like metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics, and composites/nanocomposites. In turn, the book addresses the latest techniques and approaches to engineering material surfaces/interfaces in, e.g., implants, tissue engineering, drug delivery, antifouling, and dentistry. Lastly, it summarizes various challenges in the design and development of novel biomaterials. Prof. Lalit M. Pandey is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, IIT Guwahati. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He was awarded an Erasmus Mundus India4EU fellowship to pursue research at the Laboratoire des Matériaux et du Génie Physique (LMGP), Grenoble-INP, France from 2010 to 2012. Before joining the IIT Guwahati, he worked as a Scientist with the Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India from 2009 to 2014, and researched on water and air pollution in agro-based industries. He has received several awards, including the Shastri Covid-19 Pandemic Response Grant (SCPRG) 2020, the DST-UKIERI Award (2018), the IEI (The Institution of Engineers [India]) Young Engineers Award (2017), Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Faculty Award (2014) and an Early Career Research Award from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. His main research interests include biointerfaces and biomaterials, biochemical engineering, and environmental biotechnology. He has published over seventy research articles in international journals and serves on the editorial board of five international journals. He is serving as Associate Editor in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and Frontiers in Materials. He has co-edited one book titled “Biointerface Engineering: Prospects in Medical Diagnostics and Drug Delivery” published by Springer Nature in 2020.  He is a life member of the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE), and Nano and Molecular Society (India), and serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.    Dr. Abshar Hasan received his Ph.D. in Biosciences and Bioengineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India, in 2018 and began working as a Research Fellow at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London, UK. In 2019, he moved to the University of Nottingham, UK, where he is currently working as a Research Associate at the School of Pharmacy. His research interests lie in engineering metallic and polymeric surfaces to develop functional materials, gain mechanistic insights into protein and cell behavior on surfaces, and develop functional materials for tissue engineering and environmental applications. He is a recipient of a prestigious Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarship in 2017, has and has published more than 25 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals and book chapters. He currently serves as a reviewer for various international journals, including Pharmaceutics, Applied Sciences, Materials, Coatings, and Surfaces. He is a research member of international scientific societies, e.g., the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), UK, and the Tissue and Cell Engineering Society (TCES), UK.
