This book introduces advanced or emerging technologies for conversion of wastes into a variety of high-value chemicals and materials. Energy and resources can be recovered from various residential, industrial and commercial wastes, such as municipal wastewater and sludge, e-waste, waste plastics and resins, crop residues, forestry residues and lignin. Advanced waste-to-resource and energy technologies like pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, fractionation, de-polymerization, gasification and carbonization are also introduced. The book serves as an essential guide to dealing with various types of wastes and the methods of disposal, recovery, recycling and re-use.  As such it is a valuable resource for a wide readership, including graduate students, academic researchers, industrial researchers and practitioners in chemical engineering, waste management, waste to energy and resources conversion and biorefinery.

Dr. Laleh Nazari is a Research Scientist and Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). She worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR), and Trojan Technologies, respectively. She completed her Ph.D. degree in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (2016) at the University of Western Ontario. She received her Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tehran (2007) and Iran University of Science and Technology (2005), respectively; Her publications include 11 papers and 3 book chapters (authored/co- authored). A US patent has been granted to her PhD research project which has also been licensed for commercialization.

Dr. Charles Xu is full Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University, Fellow of Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC) and Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE). He was the NSERC/FPInnovations Industrial Research Chair in Forest Biorefinery (2011-2016), acquiring an international reputation in the field of biorefinery, particularly on bio-based chemicals and materials from forestry/ agricultural residues, catalytic conversion of glycerol and sugars into green chemicals, resources recovery from wastewater sludges and microalgae, as well as utilizations of biomass and bioenergy in iron and steel manufacturing processes. He has authored/edited3books on biorefinery, and published 20+book chapters and 230+ papers in peer-reviewed journals and 150+ conference papers/abstracts. In accordance to Google Scholar, his work has received total citationsof over 10,000 with an H-index of 53 to date. He wasthe recipient ofthe 2011 Syncrude Canada Innovation Award and the 2019 Award in Design and Industrial Practice from Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Madhumita B Ray is a Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, and the Director of WesternWater Centre, at Western University. Her research areas include development of advanced air, water and wastewater treatment technologies and environmental modelling. Her publications include7 book chapters, 2 patents, 1 license, 210 articles, with an h-index 38, i10 index- 93, and 5153 citations. She has been an executive member of environmental division of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC), organizing chair for environmental symposia for both CIC and Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers, guest editor for special issues for Environments, Energies, Int. J. of Environmental Technology and Management, Environmental Engineering Science, and in editorial board of Journal of Catalysis and Chemical Engineering Advances and Int. J. of Environmental Research and Public Health.  She has been a visiting professor in China, Russia, Ghana, India, and the Netherlands. She received Western Engineering Research Excellence award, and Hilal Distinguished Speaker award of IIChemE, License Agreement Award, Vanguard Awards, 2020 among others.
