This book focuses on polymer insulation as applied to HVDC transmission. It addresses both fundamental principles and engineering practice, with more weight placed on the latter. This is achieved by providing in-depth studies on a number of major topics such as DC insulation structure, DC insulation design, nanocomposites, modification, testing and performance evaluation. In turn, several typical HVDC insulation application cases are examined in detail, e.g. cables, cable accessories, GIS/GIL, and converter transformers. A comprehensive and systematic study on polymer insulation modification and ageing assessment is one of the book's major features, making it particularly well suited for readers who are interested in learning about polymer insulation materials. Given its scope, it offers a valuable resource for researchers, engineers and graduate students in the fields of high-voltage and insulation technologies, electrical engineering, material engineering, etc.

Boxue Du received the M.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Ibaraki University and the Ph.D. degree from Tokyo University of A&T. During 1996 to 2002, he was with The Niigata Institute of Science and Technology, Japan, and was an Associate Professor. From 2000 to 2002, he was a Visiting Scientist at Niigata University, Japan. Since 2002, he has been a Professor and Director-Founder of the Institute of High Voltage at the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Tianjin University, China. His research interests are focused on dielectric failure mechanisms of polymer insulating materials, electrical insulation technology and application of polymer dielectrics under various extreme environments such as cryogenic, high temperature, high altitude, gamma-ray irradiation and high-intensity magnetic field. He has published 4 books including 'Accelerating the Discovery of New Dielectric Properties in Polymer Insulation' (CyberTech, 2017) and 'Properties and Application of Polymer Dielectrics' (InTech, 2017) and 8 book chapters in Polymer Dielectrics and authored about 500 papers and over 150 of them published in IEEE Transactions. He has also served industry and start-ups as a consultant. He is an IEEE China Council on Superconductivity Chapter, Chief Committee Member; Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering, High Voltage New Technology Committee Member; Chinese Electrotechnical Society, Dielectric Committee Member, Outdoor Insulator Committee Member, Plasma Science and Application Committee Member, Electrical Cable and Wire Committee Member; Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, High Voltage and Insulation Technology Committee Member; and China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association of Automation Applications, Committee Member. He is a Fellow of IET, Senior Member of IEEE and CSEE, and Committee Member at several WG in CIGRE and IEEE Standards. He is a Guest Editor of the Special Issue on Polymeric Materials for HVDC Insulation of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation. He is an Editorial Boards Member of IET High Voltage; Chinese Journal of High Voltage Engineering; Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clear Energy; Journal of Electrical Engineering and Journal of Insulating Materials and Electrical & Energy Management Technology. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, an Associate Editor of IEEE Access and a Subject Editor of the IET Nanodielectrics.
