This book provides a comprehensive introduction of Fog Radio Access Networks (F-RANs), from both academic and industry perspectives. The authors first introduce the network architecture and the frameworks of network management and resource allocation for F-RANs. They then discuss the recent academic research achievements of F-RANs, such as the analytical results of theoretical performance limits and optimization theory-based resource allocation techniques. Meanwhile, they discuss the application and implementations of F-RANs, including the latest standardization procedure, and the prototype and test bed design. The book is concluded by summarizing the existing open issues and future trends of F-RANs.

  • Includes the latest theoretical and technological research achievements of F-RANs, also discussing existing open issues and future trends of F-RANs toward 6G from an interdisciplinary perspective;
  • Provides commonly-used tools for research and development of F-RANs such as open resource projects for implementing prototypes and test beds;
  • Includes examples of prototype and test bed design and gives tools to evaluate the performance of F-RANs in simulations and experimental circumstances.

Mugen Peng received the Ph.D. degree in communication and information systems from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), Beijing, China, in 2005. Afterward, he joined BUPT, where he has been a Full Professor with the School of Information and Communication Engineering since 2012. In 2014, he was an Academic Visiting Fellow with Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA. He leads a Research Group focusing on wireless transmission and networking technologies with the State Key Laboratory of Networking and Switching Technology, BUPT. He has authored/coauthored over 90 refereed IEEE journal papers and over 300 conference proceeding papers. Dr. Peng was a recipient of the 2018 Heinrich Hertz Prize Paper Award, the 2014 IEEE ComSoc AP Outstanding Young Researcher Award, and the Best Paper Award in the JCN 2016, IEEE WCNC 2015, IEEE GameNets 2014, IEEE CIT 2014, ICCTA 2011, IC-BNMT 2010, and IET CCWMC 2009. He is on the Editorial/Associate Editorial Board of the IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Access, IET Communications, IEEE Internet of Things Journal, and China Communications. He is the Fellow of IEEE and IET.

Zhongyuan Zhao received the B.S. degree in applied mathematics and the Ph.D. degree in communication and information systems from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), Beijing, China, in 2009 and 2014, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor with BUPT. His research interests include fog computing/edge computing, content caching, and edge intelligence in wireless networks. Dr. Zhao was the recipient of Exemplary Editors Award twice (2017 and 2018), Exemplary Reviewer of IEEE Transactions on Communications 2018, and best paper awards at the IEEE International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (CIT) 2014 and International Conference on Wireless Algorithms, Systems, and Applications (WASA) 2015. Since 2016 he serves as an Editor of IEEE Communications Letters. He was also a Guest Editor of IEEE Access, and China Communications.

Yaohua Sun received the bachelor's degree (with first class Hons.) in telecommunications engineering (with management) and Phd degree in communication engineering both from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), Beijing, China, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. He is currently an assistant professor at the State Key Laboratory of Networking and Switching Technology (SKL-NST), BUPT. His research interests include IoT, edge computing, resource management, (deep) reinforcement learning, network slicing, and fog radio access networks. He was the recipient of the National Scholarship in 2011 and 2017, and he has been reviewers for IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Systems Journal, and Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, IEEE Communications Letters, and IEEE Internet of Things Journal.
