Dr. Dharmesh Patel is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Government Engineering College, India. He received his B.E. degree from North Gujarat University in 1999 and his master's degree in Power Systems from the Sardar Patel University in 2002. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, India. His research focuses on power transformer protection, and he has published a number of articles in various international journals.
Dr. Nilesh Chothani is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering, India. He received his B.E. degree from Saurashtra University in 2001, and his master's degree in Power Systems and Ph.D. degree in Electric Engineering from the Sardar Patel University in 2004 and 2013, respectively. He has more than two decades of teaching experience.
Dr. Chothani has published several papers in respected international journals and conferences. Three of his research papers were named as works of excellence at IEEE conferences. His areas of interest include digital protection, power system modelling & simulation, and artificial intelligence techniques. He has developed a state-of-the-art power system protection laboratory, including a real-time operation of digital/numerical relaying scheme. He has received a research grants from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), DST, New Delhi, and the Government of India.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of protection schemes used for power transformers and describes the internal fault conditions and external abnormalities that may disrupt the operation of a power transformer. It also highlights the issues of current protective schemes, which pose several challenges in terms of the detection of internal faults and abnormalities, including computational burden, reduced accuracy, difficulty to implement, increased cost, computational complexity, impermeability to high resistance faults (HRF), and malfunction in conditions like cross-country fault. To address these problems, the book develops an effective novel transformer protection scheme that can eliminate all the said difficulties using an innovative algorithm. Given its scope, it is a useful resource for researchers and practitioners working in the field of power system protection, allowing them to design novel protection schemes, and providing insights into the hardware validation of developed technique.
