This book looks at the control of voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC). The objective is to understand the control structure of the VSC-HVDC system and establish the tuning criteria for the proportional-integral (PI) control of the converter controllers. Coverage includes modeling of the VSC-based HVDC transmission system using MATLAB and Simulink simulation package; implementation of control strategies for the VSC-based HVDC transmission system; and analysis of the developed system behavior under different conditions (normal and fault conditions). The book provides researchers, students, and engineers working in electrical power system transmission and power electronics and control in power transmission with a good understanding of the VSC-based HVDC transmission system concept and its behavior.

Nagwa F. Ibrahim, PhD, is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Power and Machine, Faculty of Technology and Education, Suez University. She received her PhD and MSc from Suez University, and a BSc from Suez Canal University. Her research interests are in the areas of renewable energy sources, power system protection, power electronics, high voltage direct current (HVDC), control of power electronic converters, and electrical machine drives. Sobhy Serry Dessouky, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Port Said University. In parallel, Dr. Dessouky has worked as a department chair, Vice Dean for Community Affairs and Environment, and Director of the Engineering Research Center for Developing and Technological Planning. He received his PhD degree from TU Dresden, and a BSc and MSc in electrical engineering from Suez Canal University and Helwan University, respectively. He has supervised nearly 50 MSc and 25 PhD students, and has published more than 100 papers in electrical power and high voltage engineering. He has been a member of the IEEE since 1996.
