The small cell networks are becoming the key technology to satisfy the high transmission rate requirement and the increased number of devices in 5G networks. In such networks, the small cells are highly densified in order to cope with the expected increase in traffic demand. The high densification of the small cells and mobile devices causes a strong inter-cell interference. Therefore, inter-cell interference in 5G systems is the main challenge. The major contribution of this thesis is to propose a new transmission concept, called three-dimensional modulation using beam hopping, to improve the performance and overcome the above-mentioned drawback in small cell deployment in practical LTE-Adv and beyond networks.
