This book presents 09 keynote and invited lectures and 177 technical papers from the 4th International Conference on Geotechnics for Sustainable Infrastructure Development, held on 28-29 Nov 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The papers come from 35 countries of the five different continents, and are grouped in six conference themes: 1) Deep Foundations; 2) Tunnelling and Underground Spaces; 3) Ground Improvement; 4) Landslide and Erosion; 5) Geotechnical Modelling and Monitoring; and 6) Coastal Foundation Engineering. The keynote lectures are devoted by Prof. Harry Poulos (Australia), Prof. Adam Bezuijen (Belgium), Prof. Delwyn Fredlund (Canada), Prof. Lidija Zdravkovic (UK), Prof. Masaki Kitazume (Japan), and Prof. Mark Randolph (Australia). Four invited lectures are given by Prof. Charles Ng, ISSMGE President, Prof.Eun Chul Shin, ISSMGE Vice-President for Asia, Prof. Norikazu Shimizu (Japan), and Dr.Kenji Mori (Japan).
Dr. Phung received his Doctor of Technology degree (Ph.D.) at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, 1993. He has over 40 years of international experience, including 10 years for Skanska Sweden, and 11 years for WSP Asia. His expertise areas are: deep foundations and piled raft foundations for high-rise buildings, temporary and permanent support for deep excavations, soil improvement, underpinning, pile dynamics, cut & cover tunneling, and numerical analysis of soil-structure interaction problems. He has worked with projects in many countries, among other, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, USA, England, Russia, Germany, India, Hong Kong, China and Vietnam, etc. Some of his key qualified projects are: Uni-Storebrand Headquarter in Oslo with foundation on steel-core piles into rock; SL-10 South Link in Stockholm with sheet pile wall for cut & cover tunnel in soft clay; Fredriksberg Metro Station in Copenhagen, the largest drilled-pile wall project in the world; Soil stabilisationfor Highway I15, Salt Lake Ctity, Utah, USA; Öresund Link/Bridge between Sweden and Denmark; Årsta Bridge in Stockholm with pile foundation and sheet pile wall in deep water and soft clay; and peer-review of foundation for ICC Tower, 118 floors, 490m high in Hong Kong, the No. 4 tallest high-rise in the world. He has authored and co-authored more than 80 technical papers and books in Vietnamese, English and Swedish for different national, regional and international seminars, conferences, and technical journals. Dr. Phung has a long experience in technical editing work. He was Chief Editor for proceedings of the international conference Geotec Hanoi series: the 1st Geotec Hanoi 2011 (950 p), the 2nd Geotec Hanoi 2013 (933 p), and the 3rd Geotec Hanoi 2016 (1205 p). He was also Chef Editor for the successful special Vietnam Issue of the Geotechnical Engineering Journal of the SEAGS & AGSSEA (a major geotechnical journal in South East Asia) Vol. 47 No.1 March 2016. He is currently Chef Editor for Geotechnical Engineering Journal of the SEAGS & AGSSEA Vol. 50 No. 2 June 2019, the special Issue hounoring Prof. Bengt Fellenius.
