Sustainable Seaweed Technologies: Cultivation, Biorefinery, and Applications collates key background information on efficient cultivation and biorefinery of seaweeds, combining underlying chemistry and methodology with industry experience. Beginning with a review of the opportunities for seaweed biorefinery and the varied components and properties of macroalgae, the book then reviews all the key steps needed for industrial applications, from its cultivation, collection and processing, to extraction techniques, concentration and purification. A range of important applications are then discussed, including the production of energy and novel materials from seaweed, before a set of illustrative case studies shows how these various stages work in practice.

Drawing on the expert knowledge of a global team of editors and authors, this book is a practical resource for both researchers and businesses who currently work with macroalgae.

Dr Torres was awarded her PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Santiago de Compostela. Currently, she has a research position at the University of Vigo (Spain), where is working on the integral valorisation of brown and red algae using environmental friendly technologies to obtain hydrogels and other components of industrial value. Dr Kraan is co-founder and Director of R&D at Oceana Organic Products Ltd and Aquaceuticals Ltd, Ireland - two companies that focus on human food, food applications and ingredients using (edible) seaweeds. He moved to Ireland to pursue a PhD on phylogenetics and aquaculture of edible seaweeds at the National University of Ireland, Galway in 1998. He became manager of the Irish Seaweed Industry Organisation (1998), established the Irish Seaweed Centre (2001), and Ocean Harvest Technology (2009), a company dedicated in using seaweeds for animal health and production. After 8 years he resigned to pursue and develop some commercial ideas using seaweeds for a variety of purposes amongst them functional food ingredients for human food and novel algae cultivation systems for biomass production. Dr. Herminia Domínguez received her PhD Degree in Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela. She is professor of Chemical Engineering at University of Vigo (Spain), where she has been working on the extraction of bioactive compounds from underutilized and residual sources using green technologies, particularly pressurized solvents and membrane technology.
