The installation of significant numbers of distributed generation in distribution networks results in a paradigm shift of generation from the top to the bottom of the system. Consequently, the hosting capacity of the conventionally planned distribution grid is easily reached with just a few connection of distributed generation units. Costly conventional planning reinforcement measures have been often used by distribution system operators to increase the capacity of the grid.
The emergence of future distribution networks, the so-called active distribution networks enabled by innovative technologies support the flexible operation of the grids. Considering innovative technologies in the planning phase increases the utilization of the grids assets and defers conventional grid reinforcement leading to an overall saving of a substantial amount of money. In this thesis, planning guidelines are developed to support the integration of innovative technologies in the planning of active distribution networks. A framework is designed which establishes the basis for the development of planning guidelines. The framework encompasses various steps starting from the application of gap analysis to driving planning guidelines by generalizing the results of the case studies.
