This book presents medical challenges as communication engineering problems. It offers the reader the interesting perspective of exploring and understanding disease pathology from the point of view of communication engineers. Therefore, diseases and their treatments can be addressed using conventional communication paradigms, approaches, tools and devices; thereby ushering in the interdisciplinary research platform termed advanced targeted nanomedicine. The rudimentary framework for advanced targeted nanomedicine is presented and expatiated across the seven chapters of this book.

Uche A.K. Chude-Okonkwo is a Senior Research Fellow with the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering, University of Pretoria, South Africa. His current research interests include molecular communication applied to advanced healthcare delivery, systems biology, signal processing, wireless communication and wireless sensor network.

Reza Malekian is an Associate Professor and Head of Advanced Sensor Networks Research Group at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering, University of Pretoria, South Africa. His current research interests include advanced sensor networks, Internet of Things, and signal processing. Prof. Malekian is also a Chartered Engineer and a Professional Member of the British Computer Society. He is an associate editor for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal the IET Networks, and an area editor of Ad Hoc Networks. He is also Joint-Chapter Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing and Communications Societies, South Africa chapter and chapters committee in IEEE Signal Processing Society, representative of region 8 (Europe, Africa,Middle East).

B. T. Maharaj is a full Professor and the Dean in Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria. He currently holds the research position of Sentech Chair in Broadband Wireless Multimedia Communications in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria. His research interests are in OFDM-MIMO systems, massive MIMO, cognitive radio resource allocation and 5G cognitive radio sensor networks.
