This book is designed to aid decision making, especially in regards to national and sustainable energy designs, and demonstrates how intelligent energy systems can best be utilized.
Energy is essential to all human activities as well as critical to social and economic development. Sustainable energy planning encompassing the concept of smart cities has a high potential to significantly contribute to climate change mitigation. For improved energy efficiency, it is essential to find low carbon solutions for the urban environment. The integration and management of energy supply with predominant exploitation of local resources is examined through the fundamental concept of exergy. This book can assist in decision making, with regard to sustainable energy design both at a national and local level.

Evanthia A. Nanaki works in the energy sector together with all stakeholders including universities and research centers. She holds a Mechanical Engineering PhD from the University of Western Macedonia and an MSc in Environment & Sustainable Development from the National Technical University of Athens. Her research interests include the design, planning and in depth analysis of transportation energy systems in order to reach sustainability. She has participated as an expert in the design of energy policies, promoting renewables and energy efficiency and specific energy management actions at a national and European level. George Xydis worked in the wind sector together with developers, utilities, constructors, and universities. He holds a PhD from National Technical University of Athens, and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He worked as a Wind Projects Development Coordinator at Iberdrola Renewables, at Vector Hellenic Windfarms, and as a Researcher at the Centre for Electric Power and Energy at Technical University of Denmark. George works currently as an Associate Professor at the Department of Business Development and Technology, Aarhus University.
