This book reviews state-of-the-art of polymeric biomaterials for regenerative medicine, and highlights advances in both basic science and clinical practice. It summarizes the latest techniques in polymeric scaffold fabrication, delivery carriers, physicochemical property modulation, as well as their influence on adhesion and the performance of biomolecules, cells and tissues. It also describes methods for creating biofunctional surfaces/interfaces and subsequently modulating the host response to implantable materials. Lastly, it discusses the applications of biomaterials and constructs in soft-tissue regenerative medicine. It is a valuable resource for materials scientists and engineers wishing to identify research priorities to fulfill clinical needs and provides physicians with insights into emerging novel biomaterials. This integrated approach also offers engineering students a sense of the relevance of materials science in the development of novel therapeuticstrategies.

Dr. Changyou Gao has been a professor at the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, China since 2001, and is currently the director of the Institute of Biomedical Macromolecules and Associate Chair of the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University. He was a principal investigator for National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China (2004) and was a Cheung Kong Scholar of Ministry of Education of China  (2007). His research interests include biomedical materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, as well as colloidal and nano-biomaterials for drug delivery and cellular interaction. He has published more than 300 papers in the journals of Agnew. Chem., Adv. Materials and Biomaterials, etc. and has a personal H-index above 50.
