Water treatment and desalination facilities use a tremendous amount of energy, and often release associated pollution when using conventional fossil-fuel power. This book will present the various types of technologies that could power treatment and desalination plants, such as solar, wind, geothermal, and wave power. It will describe the current status and future trends of each method, as well as membrane and thermal technologies. It will address the economic considerations of renewable energy used for desalination, and the related infrastructure capitalization, and will also offer the best potential power generation options for different regions, including islands and remote locations.

Hiren D. Raval is a working scientist with Council of Scientfic and Industrial Research-Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute Bhavnagar, India. He completed his masters in Chemical Engineering and has more than 10 years experience. His experience is diverse in academia, industry and research. He is working on research and technology development in the area of thin film composite RO membrane, Ultrafiltration membrane, Nanofiltration membrane and renewable powered desalination. He has published many papers in international journals and was chosen as Internation Desalination Association Fellow-2011, an award of high merit in desalination by IDA. He has been a recipient of Bharat Jyoti Award-2013 by India International Friendship Society for his contribution in the area. Leila Karimi, attended Sahand University of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. She then started her graduate studies at the same university and field. Leila graduated as outstanding graduate of Chemical Engineering Department at Sahand University of Technology. Upon earning her Masters degree, she taught courses from 2009-2011. She started her research as a member of the research team at the Institute for Energy and The Environment/WERC since August 2011. Her research focus is on brackish ground water desalination. Leila has done several presentations on water desalination since 2011. She was awarded the International Desalination Association's 2013 Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, she was chosen as the recipient of Helen Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship, and RTA, Reenergize the America, scholarship. Dr. Abbas Ghassemi, is the Director of Institute for Energy and Environment (IEE) and professor of Chemical Engineering at New Mexico State University. As the Director of IEE he is responsible for administrative duties, operation, budget, planning, and personnel supervision for programs in research, education, outreach in energy resources and much more. His research areas of interest include desalination, renewable energy, risk-based decision-making, water treatment, carbon management and sequestration, energy efficiency and pollution prevention, multiphase flow and process control. Dr. Ghassemi has authored and edited several textbooks and currently has a series published by CRC Press in Energy and the Environment. He has authored many publications in the areas of energy, water, carbon cycle including carbon generation and management, process control, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, education management and innovative teaching methods. Dr. Ghassemi serves on a number of public and private boards, editorial boards and peer review panels.
