This book reviews the concepts, existing technologies, and design principles necessary for energy harvesting (EH) to be applicable in creating perpetual and infinitely operating wireless sensor nodes (WSN) and sensing devices. The book further discusses how these optimized EH-WSN systems can be successfully integrated into real-life applications.
The book offers a study of the concepts, existing technologies, and design principles necessary for energy harvesting to be applicable in creating perpetual and infinitely operating wireless sensor nodes and sensing devices. It emphasizes the application of developed practical implemented energy harvesting systems like building, automotive, etc. The book describes how energy harvesting can complement the limitations of legacy batteries in emerging applications. The various sources of energy that can be harnessed, and the integration of cutting-edge energy generation, storage technologies, and power management techniques, are discussed in basic terms. The most recent advancements and developments in energy harvesting systems are covered in detail; including methods of performance enhancement and advances in both low-power electronics, as well as how these optimized EH-WSN systems are successfully integrated into real-life deployments/applications.

Yen Kheng Tan started his humble career in the electrical engineering from the year 1995 when he completed a Mechatronics Diploma at Singapore Polytechnic. He discovered the energy harvesting field for himself while he was pursuing his Ph.D. degree in year 2006 from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of National University of Singapore (NUS). Over the past two decades, he made several translational technologies with (a) companies and governmental agencies like Philips and JTC Singapore on smart low voltage DC building grid, (b) research institutions such as TUM (Technische Universitat Munchen, Germany) CREATE electric taxi onboard wireless charging system and Energy Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University on smart building technologies and electromobility programs and (c) industries i.e. Rolls-Royce, United Kingdom, on reconfigurable fault tolerant power solution for aircraft engine. His latest involvement, as of 2017, was the business development of multimillion public-private partnership programmes in the areas of smart cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity and aviation. Today, Yen Kheng is a technoprenuer, curating initiatives related to energy grid, train, IoT and Design Innovation; investor, managing real estates, businesses, and financial funds; and professional, volunteering leadership in IEEE USA, IES Singapore, etc. Yen Kheng is presently the CEO and co-founder of Printed Power Pte. Ltd., responsible for the business and research curation of IoT products and end-to-end solutions for emerging markets i.e. urban built, transportation and logistics supply chain in worldwide including USA, Israel, China, and Singapore. He is also a visiting professor, adjunct teaching staff, research collaborator at the Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) of China, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and the University of South Florida of USA respectively, curating international partnership programmes, teaching courses, and supervising graduate research students. He published more than 50 papers in refereed journals and international conferences, 10 book chapters, and 9 provisional patents/technology disclosure applications. His authorship book is the Energy Harvesting Autonomous Sensor Systems: Design, Analysis, and Practical Implementation with Taylor & Francis Group, CRC Press. Mark Wong, technologist and researcher, has been involved in a broad range of R&D projects in the last decade as a principal investigator, team leader, and consultant. He engineers and develops designs for energy harvesting, Internet of things (IoT) applications, microelectronics, wearables, microfluidics, embedded systems, high-performance computing, biomedical diagnostic sensors, stem cells, and nanotechnology processes. In 2010, he was awarded the Temasek Foundation LEARN scholarship and graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Bioengineering (Hons). He began his career working on biomedical optics, mesenchymal stem cells, embedded sensors, and ultra-low-power microelectronics designs for clinical applications and has contributed to research efforts at the Stem Cell and Cancer Institute in Jakarta, Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology at A*STAR, and at the Applied Research and Technology for Infocomm Centre in Singapore. Mark has been invited as a speaker to several conferences on IoT such as IoT Asia, the Waseda University-Singapore Polytechnic joint symposium, and Salvo Global Digital Healthcare Innovation conference. He has also been involved as an author of multiple conference proceedings, journals and provisional patents. Apart from academic pursuits, he unwinds as a scuba diving instructor and taekwondo coach and is passionate about developing the next generation of technologies, technologists and aspiring technoprenuers.
