This comprehensive reference is a state-of-the-art survey of biomass as an energy carrier for the provision of heat, electricity, and transportation fuel, considering technical, economic, environmental, and social aspects. On a global scale, biomass contributes roughly 12 to 16 % of the energy needed to cover the overall primary energy consumption. Thus far, it is humanity’s most important source of renewable energy, used on practically all continents and growing in importance even in industrialized nations. With detailed coverage of the production of solid, gaseous and liquid fuels, as well as a final energy provision, this volume serves as an introduction for readers just entering the field, but also offers new insights, up-to-date information, as well as latest findings for advanced researchers, industry experts, and decision makers.

Martin Kaltschmitt did his PhD as well as his Habilitation in the field of renewable energies at Stuttgart University / Germany. After a research stay at King's College in London and at the University of California at Berkeley he became the managing director of the Leipzig Institute for Energy non-profit research company. In 2006 he has been promoted to a full professor at Hamburg University of Technology where he is heading the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics. Between 2008 and 2010 he was in parallel the scientific managing director of the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ). He published more than 20 books and more than 210 articles in scientific magazines; the textbook about Renewable Energies and about Energy from Biomass is available in the 5th and 3rd edition, respectively. He gave also more than 500 presentation on scientific conferences and seminars within the field of renewable energy and especially bioenergy.
