Impact of Long-Period Ground Motions on Structural Design: A Case Study for Bucharest, Romania (eBook)
IX, 87 Seiten
Springer International Publishing (Verlag)
978-3-319-73402-6 (ISBN)
This book discusses the impact of long-period ground motions on structural design using the situation in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, as a case study. The first part explores the seismic hazard situation in Bucharest, and the causes of long-period ground motions related to both the source and the site. Subsequently, it examines the current seismic design, detailing building practices in Bucharest, and discusses the impact of long-period ground motions on seismic design. Lastly, several case study buildings in Bucharest are presented and the major difficulties encountered in their design are considered. The book also includes various numerical examples that help readers understand the impact of long-period ground motions on various structural systems, that are currently used in Bucharest. This book is intended for researchers in the field of seismic hazard and risk assessment and designers of multi-story buildings in seismic areas.
Florin Pavel is a lecturer at the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB). He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Foreign Languages in 2008 and obtained his PhD at the same University in 2012. He has authored and co-authored more than 70 papers and one book related to the fields of earthquake engineering, seismic hazard, structural reliability and seismic risk.
Viorel Popa has been the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB) since 2016. He graduated from the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest in 1999 and obtained his PhD from the same university in 2006. He was Director of the National Center for Seismic Risk Reduction in the period 2009 - 2010 and Director of the Reinforced Concrete Department of UTCB in the period 2015 - 2016.
Radu Vacareanu is Professor of Structural Reliability and Risk Analysis at UTCB and, since 2016, Rector of UTCB. He obtained his PhD in the field of seismic risk assessment in 1999. In the period 2002 - 2008, he was Director of the National Center for Seismic Risk Reduction, implementing the JICA (Japan Technical Cooperation Agency) Project on seismic risk reduction for buildings and structures in Romania. His research interests cover seismic hazard, fragility, and risk analyses. He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings.
