The first of three electrical installation books at Part 1 level, which cover topics in the new City and Guilds 236-7 syllabus scheme reflecting competence-based learning. This book covers mechanical and electrical science, and also includes basic electronics.
As an introduction, Chapter 1 concentrates on terminology to provide an understanding of electrotechnical terms and a mathematical background to support the reading of the other chapters. Chapter 2, "Mechanical Science", attempts to give an awareness of the many different principles and laws associated with physical topics: the simple lever; equilibrium; centre of gravity; linear expansion, etc. Chapter 3, "Electrical Science", commences with basic circuit theory, and aims to develop awareness of the common effects of electric current such as its heating effect; magnetic effect and chemical effect. Other topics such as power factor and efficiency are also discussed. Chapter 4 concentrates on basic electronics, introducing electronic components and semiconductor devices as well as a.c. theory and alternating and digital waveforms. Multiple-choice questions of the type in an examination are given in Appendix 1; Appendix 2 contains short-answer questions. The answers to all these questions and questions in the exercises in the chapters are given in Appendix 3.

Part 1 Terminology: definitions of SI and derived units; metric system of measurement; powers of a quantity (indices); useful metric weights and measures; transposition of formulae; mensuration; graphs and charts; ratio, proportion and percentage; BS3939 circuit symbols; miscellaneous terms and symbols; exercise 1. Part 2 Mechanical science: mass, force and weight; Newton's laws of motion; exercise 2.1; vector quantities; equilibrium; principle of moments; density; exercise 2.2; heat, temperature and expansion; gas laws; work, energy and power; simple machines; exercise 2.3. Part 3 Electrical science: basic circuit theory; Ohm's law; resistance factors; resistor connections; resistors in series; resistors in parallel; energy and power; heating effects of electric current; power factor; efficiency; magnetic effects of electric current; simple loop generators; transformers; chemical effects of electric current; secondary cells; exercise 3. Part 4 Electronics: electronic components; resistors; capacitors; inductors; semiconductor devices diode; light emitting diodes; photodiode; transistor; thyristor; diacs and triacs; thermistor; integrated circuit - alternating current waveforms; exercise 4. Appendix 1: Multiple choice questions. Appendix 2: Short answer questions. Appendix 3: Answers.
