In this dissertation, different controllers for the electrical drive systems in a novel wind turbine are designed and implemented. In order to reduce the power class of the converter and its corresponding grid side filter in the large scale wind turbines, a mechanical power split, which is realized by a planetary gearbox, is introduced for the wind turbine. The split power is delivered to a synchronous generator a permanent magnet excited synchronous machine (servo PMSM). The synchronous generator is directly connected to the power grid without any power electronic devices. Meanwhile, the servo PMSM is controlled by a small scale converter connecting to the power grid. It is theoretically proven in this dissertation that the rated power of the servo PMSM and the corresponding converter can be less than 10% of the rated power of the wind turbine. To minimize the rated power of the servo PMSM and the converter, it is expected that the servo PMSM is able to be operated in the deep field weakening region. Moreover, high level of safety and robustness, fast torque dynamics and small torque ripples are also required by the servo PMSM drive system.
