With high urbanization rates, advancement in technologies, and changes in consumption behavior of people, wastes generated through the daily activities of individuals and organizations pose many challenges in their management. The articles presented in this edited volume deal with the attempts made by the scientists and practitioners to address contemporary issues in geoenvironmental engineering such as characterization of dredged sediments, geomaterials & waste, valorization of waste, sustainability in waste management and some other geoenvironmental issues that are becoming quite relevant in today's world. This volume is part of the proceedings of the 1st GeoMEast International Congress and Exhibition on Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, Egypt 2017.

ABDULLAH GALAA ABDELAAL, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Abdullah has more than twelve years of experience in the fields of geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineering and waste management through conducting research, teaching and providing consulting services. He has a bachelor degree in civil engineering from Cairo University, Egypt, and obtained a PhD degree from the University of Toronto, Canada and is licensed professional engineer in Ontario, Canada. Abdullah's research focused on assessing the liquefaction potential of stabilized mine waste and characterizing its stiffness development using non-destructive techniques. After PhD, research focus tuned to the behavior of sustainable construction materials (Rammed Earth) and the reuse of dredged marine sediments. Abdullah was involved in solving geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineering problems including design of landfills, dewatering and hydrogeology, slope stability, deep and shallow foundations, and earth retention systems; he planned and led many site investigation and quality control programs. Abdullah was involved in large scale infrastructure projects such as subway tunnels and landfills. In addition, Abdullah was involved as a consultant in planning and supporting entrepreneurial groups working in the waste management sector.  Recently, Abdullah was involved, as a consultant, in establishing the first industrial waste exchange program in Egypt as well as identification and assessment of key policy reforms and investment options to reduce air, water and land pollution in Egypt.

D. N. SINGH
Prof. Singh is an Institute Chair Professor at Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. He obtained B. Tech., M. Tech. And Ph. D. From Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, during 1986, 1989 and 1993, respectively. He mainly researches and practices Environmental Geotechnology an upcoming field in the realm of Civil and Geotechnical Engineering. His research is multidisciplinary and focused on 'geomaterials characterization' by employing various energy fields. In the process, he and his research group have successfully evolved several 'need-based' instrumentation that has become a panacea for dealing with the issues being faced by the contemporary society due to rapid and uncontrolled industrialization. He is Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Geotechnics, a journal published by the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK. He is recipient of Young teachers' award (instituted by the AICTE, New Delhi), 2003 SP Research Award (instituted by Shamsher Prakash Foundation, Rolla, MO, USA); John R. Booker Excellence Award-2011 (instituted by IACMAG, USA) and Richard Feynman Prize 2014 (instituted by the ICE, UK). He is a fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
