This book explores the ways that disciplinary convergence and technological advance are transforming systems engineering to address gaps in complex systems engineering: Transdisciplinary Systems Engineering (TSE). TSE reaches beyond traditional disciplines to find connections-and this book examines a range of new methods from across such disparate areas of scholarship as computer science, social science, human studies, and systems design to reveal patterns, efficiencies, affordances, and pathways to intuitive design. Organized to serve multiple constituencies, the book stands as an ideal textbook supplement for graduate courses in systems engineering, a reference text for program managers and practicing engineers in all industries, and a primary source for researchers engaged in multidisciplinary research in systems engineering and design.

Dr. Azad M. Madni is Professor and Director of the Systems Architecting and Engineering Program of the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering, University of Southern California. Dr. Madni has received numerous awards from DoD, and the commercial sector, and professional societies, including the SBA’s National Tibbetts’ award for California, Blue Chip Enterprise Award for California from Mass Mutual and the US Chamber of Commerce, the C.V. Ramamoorthy Distinguished Scholar Award in 2006, the President’s award in 2008 from the Society of Design and Process Science, and Developer of the Year award in 2000 and 2004 from the Technology Council of Southern California. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science. His research interests include Intelligent systems engineering, complex engineered systems, adaptive architectures, human-centered design, systems architecting, modeling, simulation and analyses.
