Optoelectronic devices utilize semiconductor structures that enable the interaction and propagation of electrons and photons, and are the foundation of a huge range of devices. This handbook provides an overview of modeling and simulation for optoelectronic device design, analysis, and performance optimization.
Optoelectronic devices are now ubiquitous in our daily lives, from light emitting diodes (LEDs) in many household appliances to solar cells for energy. This handbook shows how we can probe the underlying and highly complex physical processes using modern mathematical models and numerical simulation for optoelectronic device design, analysis, and performance optimization. It reflects the wide availability of powerful computers and advanced commercial software, which have opened the door for non-specialists to perform sophisticated modeling and simulation tasks. The chapters comprise the know-how of more than a hundred experts from all over the world. The handbook is an ideal starting point for beginners but also gives experienced researchers the opportunity to renew and broaden their knowledge in this expanding field.

For more than two decades, he worked in industry and academia on modeling, simulation, and analysis of various optoelectronic devices. Dr. Piprek has taught graduate courses at universities in Germany, Sweden, and in the United States. He was invited guest editor for several journal issues on optoelectronic device simulation and currently serves as an executive editor of Optical and Quantum Electronics as well as an associate editor for the Journal of Computational Electronics. Dr. Piprek is founder and co-chair of the annual conference on Numerical Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices and he has also (co-)chaired several SPIE conferences. He has published 3 books, 6 book chapters, 4 patents, and more than 200 research papers.
