The Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011, officially designated the “Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku, Japan Earthquake” by the Japan Meteorological Agency caused an unprecedentedly severe disaster in the northeastern part (Tohoku) of the Japanese island of Honshu. This first volume of the series Natural Disaster Science and Mitigation Engineering: DPRI Reports covers various aspects of investigations of scientific findings as well as issues related to the disaster and the subsequent evacuation necessitated by the earthquake. The series presents recent advances in natural disaster sciences and mitigation technologies developed in Japan, which will be valuable for the mitigation of disasters of a similar kind resulting from future events around the world.

Introduction.- Coseismic Deformations of the 2011 Tohoku, Japan, Earthquake and Triggered Events Derived from ALOS/PALSAR.- Source Process of the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake.- Field Survey of the Damage Caused by the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami.- Revisiting the Concept of Tsunami Tendenko: Tsunami evacuation behavior in the Great East Japan Earthquake.- Soil-slide avalanches of pyroclastic fall deposits induced by the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake.- Estimation of Strong Motion during the 2011 Northern Nagano Earthquake and an Associated Building Damage Survey.- Landslides in urban residential slopes induced by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake.- Soil Amplification and Nonlinearity Studies at K-Net Sites in Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan Based on H/V Spectral Ratios for Earthquake Ground Motions.- Soil liquefaction along the Tokyo Bay coast induced by the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku earthquake.- Sediment-related disasters caused by the Nagano-ken Hokubu Earthquake in the heavy snow season.- High-Resolution Local-Scale Ssimulations of Meteorological Conditions and Wind Fields over the Fukushima Region in March 2011.- Uncertainty in simulation of global transport of radioactive tracer emitted from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
