Aiming to present concise coverage of the physical and biological basics of radiation biology and protection, the book describes methods of particle detection and dosimetric evaluation. The effects of ionizing radiation on man are treated from the initial phases to possible pathological results.
This book aims to give concise coverage of the physical and biological basics of radiation biology and protection. Beginning with a description of the methods of particle detection and dosimetric evaluation, the book discusses the effects of ionizing radiation on man, from the initial physico-chemical phase of interaction to their conceivable pathological consequences. Regulations, limits and safeguards on nuclear power plants, radioisotope installations and medical centres which make use of ionizing radiation are given and the risks of exposure to natural, industrial and scientific radiation sources evaluated. The final chapter takes a look at some of the more important nuclear accidents, including Windscale, Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, and describes basic procedures to be carried out in the eventuality of a nuclear emergency.

Sources of ionizing radiation and their interactions with matter; detection and measurement of ionizing radiation; dosimetry; biological effects of ionizing radiation; effects of ionizing radiation on the human body; natural radioexposure; medical radioexposure; industrial radioexposure of electronuclear origin; radioexposure due to human activities other than the medical uses of ionizing radiation, the functioning of nuclear power plants, or atomic testing; radioexposure due to experimental nuclear explosions; radiation protection; accidents and incidents with external and/or internal radioexposure.
