When this book appeared in its first German edition in 1976, its aim was to provide a synopsis of the principles and applications of electromedicine, which would act as a reference source for medical practitioners as well as technicians and engineers. Since that time, the subject of biotechnology has advanced so rapidly that a second, and now a third edition became necessary in order to keep pace with new developments in methodology and technology. The first English edition therefore maintains the original aim to present a concise introduction to electromedicine, but now offers several completely revised chapters on cardiac catheterization, blood pressure and blood flow, pulmonary function analysis, diagnostic ultrasound, and safety aspects. Other subjects which have been updated include patient monitoring, and measuring techniques in perinatal medicine. As well as defining the essentials of this complex subject, the book represents an overview of current practice in electromedicine which should be useful for clinicians, students, physicists and engineers alike.
