This book gives a comprehensive overview of ceramic surface functionalization approaches for ceramic materials including alumina, zirconia, titania and silica and their use as sensors, chemical and biological probes, chromatographic supports for (bio)molecule purification and analysis, and as adsorbents for toxic substances and pollutants. It provides a broad picture of the enormous possibilities offered by surface functionalization and, in addition, addresses the current challenges regarding surface analysis, characterization and stability.

Kurosch Rezwan is Professor and Head of the Advanced Ceramics group at the University of Bremen, Germany. He earned his PhD degree with distinction from the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and carried out his thesis on protein adsorption onto colloidal oxide particles in aqueous suspensions. After a research visit at the University of California Santa Barbara, USA, and postdoctoral research at Imperial College London, UK, he joined the Faculty of Process and Industrial Engineering at the University of Bremen as an Assistant Professor for Bioceramics in 2006 and became Professor of Advanced Ceramics in 2009. Kurosch Rezwan has authored more than ninety scientific peer-reviewed publications and has received numerous scientific awards and major grants, including the ETH HILTI award for innovation and excellence in science and engineering, the Fritz-Behrens Award for outstanding scientists, the most cited Biomaterials paper award and an ERC distinction. Laura Treccani is Senior Researcher at Petroceramics S.p.A. (Stezzano), Italy. She earned her degree in physics from the Catholic University of Brescia, Italy, and carried out her PhD thesis on biomineralization processes and interactions between nacre proteins and mineral crystals. In 2006 she joined the Bioceramics Group at the Faculty of Process and Industrial Engineering at the University of Bremen as research fellow and Vice Head of the Advanced Ceramics at the University of Bremen till 2015. Her research is broad and, among other topics, focuses on the development and characterization methodologies for surface modification of ceramic materials for biomaterials, bioengineering, nanotoxicological and environmental applications as well as composite products for aerospace. Laura Treccani has authored more than sixty peer-reviewed scientific publications and has received numerous awards and grants and she has been appointed Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineer at the University of Brescia (Italy).
