This book provides a comprehensive discussion of nonlinear multi-modal structural vibration problems, and shows how vibration suppression can be applied to such systems by considering a sample set of relevant control techniques. It covers the basic principles of nonlinear vibrations that occur in flexible and/or adaptive structures, with an emphasis on engineering analysis and relevant control techniques.
Understanding nonlinear vibrations is becoming increasingly important in a range of engineering applications, particularly in the design of flexible structures such as aircraft, satellites, bridges, and sports stadia. There is an increasing trend towards lighter structures, with increased slenderness, often made of new composite materials and requiring some form of deployment and/or active vibration control. There are also applications in the areas of robotics, mechatronics, micro electrical mechanical systems, non-destructive testing and related disciplines such as structural health monitoring. Two broader themes cut across these application areas: (i) vibration suppression - or active damping - and, (ii) adaptive structures and machines.
In this expanded 2nd edition, revisions include:
- An additional section on passive vibration control, including nonlinear vibration mounts.
- A more in-depth description of semi-active control, including switching and continuous schemes for dampers and other semi-active systems.
- A complet
The book is accessible to practitioners in the areas of application, as well as students and researchers working on related topics. In particular, the aim is to introduce the key concepts of nonlinear vibration to readers who have an understanding of linear vibration and/or linear control, but no specialist knowledge in nonlinear dynamics or nonlinear control.
Introduction to Nonlinear Vibration and Control.- Nonlinear Vibration Phenomena.- Control of Nonlinear Vibrations.- Approximate Methods for Analysing Nonlinear Vibrations.- Model Analysis for Nonlinear Vibration.- Beams.- Cables.- Plates and Shells. 2nd edition updates: As Chapters are often downloaded individually the authors will attempt to make each chapter more self contained during the revision. In addition minor typos will be fixed in all chapters and 2/3 additional problems will be added to each of the Chapters 2-4. A Preface to the 2nd edition will also be added. They also plan the following additions: Chapter 2: Addition to Section 2.6 to explain the concepts of internal resonance and higher order bifurcations (estimated 4 pages) Chapter 3: 1. An additional section on passive vibration control, including nonlinear vibration mounts and the inteter. 2. Subsection 3.1.1 will be expanded to be a more in-depth description of semi-active control. This will include more on Skyhook, but also switching and continuous schemes for dampers and other semi-active systems. (estimated 10/15 pages for both) Chapter 4: Section 4.5 will be rewritten using the more up-to-date second order normal form method. The current material will be moved to a new 20 page Appendix. This Chapter will remain approximately the same size. Chapter 5: Section 5.4 will be rewritten using the second order normal form method and expanded to include new material on bifurcation of backbone curves, unfoldings, stability analysis and centre manifold theory. (estimated 5/10 extra pages) Chapter 6: Section 6.3 will have an expanded discussion of spillover effects and control using inertial actuators. (extra 3 pages) Chapter 7: Section 7.4 will have and additional subsection on the interaction of Arnold tongues with backbone curves. (extra 3/5 pages) Chapter 7: Section 8.5 will be expanded by having additional experimental results included. Section 8.6 on Morphing will be brought up-to-date as this is a rapidly developing field. (estimated 5/10 pages) New Appendix from existing material in Chapter 4 will be created. (estimated 20 pages) A second Appendix will include solutions to selected problems from Chaps 2-4 (estimated 20 pages) Total estimate for new pages (70 to 87 extra pages)
