Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow in Biological Processes covers emerging areas in fluid flow and heat transfer relevant to biosystems and medical technology. This book uses an interdisciplinary approach to provide a comprehensive prospective on biofluid mechanics and heat transfer advances and includes reviews of the most recent methods in modeling of flows in biological media, such as CFD. Written by internationally recognized researchers in the field, each chapter provides a strong introductory section that is useful to both readers currently in the field and readers interested in learning more about these areas.

Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow in Biological Processes is an indispensable reference for professors, graduate students, professionals, and clinical researchers in the fields of biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry and medicine working on applications of fluid flow, heat transfer, and transport phenomena in biomedical technology.

Sid Becker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury. He is an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and is a recipient of the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Grant. He has held academic positions in Germany, the United States, and New Zealand. His research is primarily in computational and analytical modelling of heat and mass transfer processes in biological media. Dr. Becker is also the editor of the book Modeling of Microscale Transport in Biological Processes (2017) and co-editor of the books Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow in Biological Processes (2015), and Transport in Biological Media (2013). Dr. Kuznetsov is Professor at the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University. He holds a joint professorial position at the University of North Carolina’s Biomedical Engineering Department. He is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineering, an Editorial Board Member of the Proceeding of the Royal Society A, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Porous Media. He is a recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Research Award. In 2014, Dr. Kuznetsov was elected as a Member of the Scientific Council of the International Center of Heat and Mass Transfer. He has published more than 400 journal papers, 17 book chapters, 3 books, and 100 conference papers. His works have been cited over 12,000 times: he has an h-index of 51 and an i-10 index of over 220. While his most notable early contributions are in the development of the field of porous media, Prof. Kuznetsov’s research interests in the general area of numerical modeling are extensive, including transport in living tissues, sub-cellular transport, mass transport in neurons and axons, bioheat transport, bioconvective sedimentation, fluid mechanics, flows in microgravity, and turbulence.
