Discovering the life and work of a true artist: Donald Ross. "I grew up playing a Donald Ross golf course, Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, so my standards of what a good golf course should be were based on a Ross design. I think being exposed early to a Donald Ross course provided me balance, as both a player and future golf course designer, because of the variety of shots found throughout each of his design. Ross was without a doubt a great influence on my design career, and he remains a personal favourite. I am happy to see Brad Klein devote a book to the work of Donald Ross. Brad is passionate about golf course design and that translates in his writing." -Jack Nicklaus.
Bradley is founding editor of Superintendent News and architecture editor of Golfweek. A former PGA Tour caddie, he holds a Ph.D. in political science and enjoyed a distinguished academic career in international relations before retiring from teaching to devote himself full--time to golf writing. He runs Golfweek's "America's Best" national course rating system that determines the country's top--100 Classical and top--100 Modern courses. He is also a design consultant and a frequent speaker at industry and association meetings. Klein is a member of Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Ross's hometown in Scotland and of Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford, CT, the home course of the Donald Ross Society. Klein's first book, Rough Meditations (Sleeping Bear Press, 1997), is a collection of essays about life on the Tour, traveling the golf world, and the elements of course architecture. He lives in Bloomfield, CT and is currently at work on a history of course design and maintenance.
