An exploration of every aspect of the Italian home, rustic or stately, capturing the passion and exuberance of the Italian people and their interior style. It explains how the look is created at every level -floors, walls and ceilings - through colour, fabrics, furniture and objects.
This volume explores every aspect of the Italian home, rustic or stately, to capture the passion and exuberance of the Italian people and their distinctive interior style. Jane Gordon Clark describes the key elements of Italian style. She explains how the look is created at every level - floors, walls and ceilings - by a confident combination of strong colours, sumptuous fabrics rich in pattern and texture, a judicious choice and arrangement of furniture and an accumulation of striking objects. This approach seeks to inspire anyone who would like to achieve the same bold effects. The photographs were taken at selected locations in Tuscany, Umbria, Venice and Lazio.

Jane Gordon Clark is a designer and writer on interior design. While a student at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford she travelled widely in Italy, developing an interest in Italian art, architecture and design. Ten years ago she and her husband acquired a small ruined castle in Umbria which she has been gradually restoring, spending part of each year in Italy. She founded the design company Ornamenta in 1987 and creates their collections of trompe l'oeil decorations, hand-printed wallpapers and fabrics. She is chairman of the Friends of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the author of Frances Lincoln's Paper Magic (1991). Simon Upton is a regular contributor to leading interiors magazines such as The World of Interiors and House and Garden. He has taken the photographs for several books including Living National Treasures and Living in London and was principal photographer for Beatrix Potter at Home in the Lake District (Frances Lincoln 2000).
