Tree Sparrows are widely distributed throughout most of Europe and Asia, and have been introduced in many other parts of the world. This book describes the species' origins and early spread, plus a speculative section on the evolution of the present distribution. The bulk of the book discusses the species' habits, breeding, movements, numbers and food, and is extensively illustrated throughout, with drawings by Robert Gilmor.

The humble House Sparrow, common everywhere, was surprisingly poorly researched and Summers-Smith's work soon provided interesting insights into this successful and adaptable little bird.Denis Summers-Smith first took up the study of the House Sparrow in 1947, thinking that the difficulties of travel in post-war Britain would best suit the study of a species always close at hand.
