As many of the authors in this book note, the energy available in the hydrogen currently produced around the world is relatively small when compared to the global primary energy use. Such comparisons however yield a poor estimate of hydrogen's importance as we undergo the necessary transition towards low carbon intensity energy generation systems. There are many possible scenarios for future global supply of energy. Production of hydrogen is of vital importance if we wish to secure reliable supplies of low carbon energy. This book is about the methods which can be used to produce the hydrogen that is needed. The methods presented range from those which seek to further develop existing technologies through refinement of the catalysts used, to new methods relying on direct use of sunlight or micro-organisms. The material presented ranges from topic reviews to experimental studies, many of which are at the forefront of their respective areas.

Preface; The Prospects for Hydrogen as an Energy Carrier: An Overview of Hydrogen Energy & Hydrogen Energy Systems; Fundamental Questions for Hydrogen Production; Process Routes of Hydrogen Production from Fossil & Renewable Resources; Syngas Production By Short Contact Time Catalytic Partial Oxidation of Methane; New Developments in Catalytic Decomposition of Methane to Produce Co2-Free Hydrogen & Advanced Carbon Materials; Water Gas Shift Reaction; Process Sensitivity to Ni/Alumina Catalysts in the Production of Hydrogen from the Steam-Reforming of Glycerol; Enhancing Hydrogen Production from the Glycerol Steam Reforming Process through Co2 Removal; Hydrogen Production from Bioethanol; Bioenthanol Production Simulation & Control; Search & Evaluation Method of Hydrogen Fermentation Microflora; Inorganic Membrane & Membrane Reactor Technologies for Hydrogen Production; Development of Novel Immobilizing Hydrogels for Thermophilic Hydrogen Production; Hydrogen Production through Sono-Photolysis of Water in the Presence of Solid Solutions of Metal Oxides as Photocatalysts.; Recent Advances in Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation; Index.
