The overall goal of the BORIS project was to use data and samples from the Russian borehole injection sites for liquid radioactive waste at Krasnoyarsk-26 and Tomsk-7 to further understand the chemical behaviour and migration of radionuclides in the geological environment. A subsidiary goal has been to archive historical data from the sites, thereby ensuring their preservation. Databases describing the geology, hydrogeology and operation of the Krasnoyarsk-26 and Tomsk-7 sites have been compiled including waste compositions, injection history, piezometric, hydrochemical, geological and geophysical measurements. The BORIS database provides an extensive resource for understanding radionuclide migration in near-field and geosphere environments. Time-lapse gamma and hydrochemical data provide a graphic demonstration that clay layers within and adjacent to the disposal horizons are effective barriers to vertical radionuclide migration, and illustrate the influence of geological structure on transport.
