Nuclear Safety

On 6 November 2002, the European Commission adopted a series of major initiatives in the nuclear sector, proposing to set up basic obligations and general principles in the Community as well as strict measures for the safe management of all forms of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. These proposals have since been reviewed by a group of experts from Member States according to the rules laid down in Article 31 of the Euratom Treaty, and the revised text was adopted by the Commission on 30 January 2003. This revised text, together with a report on the proposals drawn up by the European Economic and Social Committee, was formally sent to the Council of Ministers and to the European Parliament on 2 May 2003.
