In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the development of porous materials for, among others, catalysis, environmental protection, nano-engineering, pharmaceuticals and separation technology. In addition, new procedures have been put forward for the design and characterization of model pore structures. This multi-authored reference covers in considerable detail the classification, synthesis, characterization and application of a wide range of porous materials, including carbons, oxides, polymers and zeolites. Specialists in such fields as surface and colloid science, advanced materials and membrane technology will use and appreciate this information source in their daily work. Other scientists and technologists will turn to individual chapters to find the latest, authoritative reviews. This title deserves to be found in every library.
Ferdi Schuth studied chemistry and law in Munster, Germany. After he received his PhD, Schuth went to Minneapolis for a Post-Doc and then to Mainz University as habilitand. In 1995 he became professor in Frankfurt, Germany. Since 1998, Schuth is the Director at the Max-Planck-Institute fur Kohlenforschung. His research interests are in the area of materials science and catalysis, especially in the synthesis of catalyst materials. Even though Schuth is a relatively young scientist he is already well decorated with awards, e.g. the Leibniz-Award of the German Science Foundation. Kenneth Sing is an emeritus professor of Brunel University and visiting professor at Bristol University, both in the UK. He is co-author of the well-known book Adsorption, Surface Area and Porosity.
