Issues examined include the pace and content of reform so far, the development of wholesale markets, and the growth of a complementary financial system. Of special interest is the impact of marketing reform on regional trade patterns in the domestic market and implications for China's international grain trade policy.

CHRISTOPHER FINDLAY is Associate Professor, Department of Economics at the University of Adelaide. The first year principles course in economics is Dr Findlay's main teaching task and he is co-author of a text book for Australian students. Australia's economic relations with Asia are the theme of his research. A special interest is the reform and industrialisation of the Chinese economy. ANDREW WATSON is Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on the economic and political development of contemporary China, and he is particularly interested in the process of economic reform and growth there since 1978. He has published on a variety of topics related to political and economic development in China, both before and after the establishment of the People's Republic.
