Drawn from thirty years of regular music columns that appeared in the Berkshire Eagle, (a Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper in Pittsfield, Mass.), Avoiding Cultural Default offers a cross-section of Professor Shainman's views of the economic reality of the music profession as well as a look at personalities, composers, specific compositions and observations of foreign and U.S. festivals. A hard-hitting analysis of many aspects of the performing arts world.

The Author: Irwin Shainman is Professor of Music at Williams College where he spent forty-two years, having previously earned degrees from Pomona College, Columbia University and the Paris Conservatory. In addition to classes in music history and conducting, he has been a regular contributor to newspapers and other print media. A chapter 'Verdi's Spanish Operas', appeared in a book 'From Dante to García Márquez' in 1987.
