This book is about action research as a method for change and as a means of taking up feminist research in education. Theoretically it draws on feminist poststructural theories and discusses concerns with the normalizing and regulative aspects of dominant discourses. The concepts 'moments of equity' and 'moments of normalization' are used to highlight the contradictory and complex action research process. Empirically, it provides a story of an attempt to change the teaching practices of nine compulsory-school teachers and their pupils in Sweden.

Key features include:

* a new discussion of feminist theories, action research and the problems and possibilities of producing change in the classroom
* case-studies of female and male teachers and their participation in an extended attempt to change their own and their pupils' gendered practices
* a contribution to the debate on gender equity within postmodern society

Britt-Marie Berge is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Education Umea University, Sweden. She has experiences from pedagogy in different areas; teacher at the intermediate level of compulsory school, teacher at all university levels at the department of education, teacher training and women's studies and as a parent. Her main research interest is the construction of gender in educational settings and she has carried out research in teacher education, compulsory school and study-circles. The asymmetric relations between theoretical and practical activities and between researchers and practitioners and how to bridge these gaps is another big interest. Hildur Ve is Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology, Bergen University, Norway. She was trained as and has practised as a primary school teacher for several years. After becoming a sociologist she has taught at all university levels. One of her main research interests has been gender and education. For the last 10 years she has carried out action research on gender equity in Norway and Sweden.
