This German and English collection of autobiographical essays and poems is the last of Sorell's two dozen volumes and serves as his literary and human testament. Its centerpiece is an extended meditation on the bilingual author's relationship to his mother tongue and to the English language. Sorell distills the wisdom of a long and uncommonly creative life. The result is a book of great power and poignance.

The Author: Walter Sorell (1905-1997) was a noted critic, cultural historian, essayist, poet, translator, playwright, teacher, and artist who dedicated his life to an understanding of the arts, with a special focus on the dance. Among the numerous honors and awards received by Sorell are decorations from the Republic of Austria and his native city of Vienna. The Editor: Harry Zohn, a Harvard Ph.D., is Professor of German at Brandeis University, where he has taught since 1951. The author, editor, or translator of forty volumes, he has also contributed to numerous journals, collections, and reference works. For his activities as a cultural mediator, he has been decorated by the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Austria, and the city of Vienna. Professor Zohn is a Trustee of Suffolk University and the General Editor of Peter Lang's Austrian Culture series.
