This book introduces an emerging area of research exploring the influence of extreme weather events on school systems.

Chapters explore a range of extreme weather events such as snowstorms, bushfires, extreme winds, heavy rainfall and prolonged heat waves, and their potentially widespread impacts. It also covers key challenges faced by schools, including how to protect students, levels of teacher preparation to counter extreme weather conditions and how students' learning is impacted by extreme weather patterns.

Drawing on a broad range of research in this field, this book will appeal to environmental and educational researchers, as well as those currently studying or practising in education.

Brendon Hyndman is Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Arts and Education at Charles Sturt University, where he also holds an Associate Professor of Education position within the School of Education. Hyndman’s research career and approaches have largely revolved around his teaching philosophy of promoting participant-centred and autonomous approaches to education. His widely disseminated PhD research was based upon exploring both student-centred (and student–informed) strategies to provide improved activity choices within outdoor-school-recreation settings. Hyndman is a national board member for Play Australia and Australian representative on the Global Recess Alliance. Jennifer Vanos is Associate Professor in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University. She focuses on extreme heat, thermal comfort and air pollution in her research, and examines health impacts on vulnerable populations, such as children and athletes. She is currently running numerous field projects in Arizona and collaborates with schools, government and non-profits in community-based research. Vanos is an active member of the Urban Climate Research Center at ASU and a scientific advisor for the Korey Stringer Institute and National Program for Playground Safety.
